How SPARK Transformed Batadara

SPARK Mini MBA is the flagship programme of the School of Enterprise Development at PLLI.
Meet the SPARK Graduate, David Oyetoro

When David Oyetoro first began handcrafting footwear in the bustling streets of Lagos, Nigeria, his dream was bigger than leather and stitches. His vision was to build Batadara, a proudly Nigerian footwear and accessories brand that creates handcrafted, stylish, and affordable products tailored for the modern African.

Batadara isn’t just about shoes. From belts to bracelets, every piece is designed to tell a story of culture, quality, and purpose. More than fashion, the brand is anchored in impact—empowering local artisans, creating jobs, and redefining African craftsmanship for the global stage.

Currently in its Growth Stage, Batadara is scaling operations, refining structures, and exploring expansion into other West African markets. But the road here wasn’t easy.

The Journey Before SPARK

Before joining the SPARK Mini MBA, David’s business had just moved from idea to reality. “I was at the Market Entry stage—selling consistently, but struggling with scalability, structure, and long-term clarity,” he recalls.

The challenges were plenty:

  • Inconsistent workflows
  • A blurred value proposition
  • Difficulty managing a small team
  • Pricing and marketing struggles
  • Weak customer experience systems
  • Lack of financial discipline and documented processes

“My aspirations were bold, but I lacked the systems and leadership clarity to match,” David admits.

When the opportunity to join SPARK Mini-MBA came, David didn’t hesitate. “I saw SPARK as the structure I needed. The curriculum promised practical guidance, leadership insight, and mentorship tailored to entrepreneurs like me. More importantly, I said yes because I was ready to grow—not just the business, but also myself as a leader and visionary.”

The SPARK Experience

David describes the program as nothing short of transformational.

“Each course felt like a mirror, revealing areas I had overlooked and equipping me with tools to build stronger systems. The workbooks helped me apply what I learned directly to my business, and the accountability was intense but rewarding.”

Two moments stand out sharply in his memory:

  • The Business Leadership Action Plan (BLAP), which forced him to dig deep into his values, leadership vision, and systems.
  • A powerful session at the Waridi Workshop with Ms. Waridi, whose clarity and global perspective challenged him to think bigger.

A Shift in Mindset

Perhaps the biggest transformation was internal.

“I now see business as more than profit—it’s about systems, values, and sustainable impact. I no longer just run Batadara; I lead it. I’m clearer on our identity, structure, and growth path, and I approach decisions from a place of purpose, not pressure.”

Advice for Other Entrepreneurs

David’s advice is simple but powerful:

“Go for it with your whole heart. SPARK is not just a program—it’s a mirror, a compass, and a growth accelerator. Be honest with yourself, show up fully, and commit to doing the hard work. The transformation will shock you—in a good way.”

In His Own Words,

“SPARK was the bridge between where I was and who I am now becoming—as a founder, leader, and visionary. SPARK lit up areas of my life and business I didn’t even know were dim. The journey continues, but now, I walk with confidence, clarity, and courage.”
